A Coventry ice hockey club is set to bring a new sport to the city. The Honey Badgers- based at the Skydome Arena- are expanding to incorporate a sledge hockey team within their organisation. Working with the British Sledge Hockey Association, they aim to develop a sustainable programme which will secure investment and drive growth of the sport in Coventry.

Based on the rules of ice hockey, players exchange skates for a sledge, and propel themselves along the ice using two short sticks with ice picks at one end.

Steuart Durham, of the Honey Badgers, said interest in the initiative had been overwhelming.

He said: "Coventry is home to a bustling ice hockey community, but the opportunities for people to get involved in the sport are limited. The formation of a sledge hockey team makes ice sports accessible to all."

"Sledge hockey is a fast-paced game of skill, strength and co-ordination. It is fully inclusive, meaning that men and women of all ages, disabled and non-disabled, can play together."

"After a summer of extraordinary sporting achievements, those inspired by our British Olympians and Paralympians can give sport a go with us."
